On September 22 the contract that ran animal control in Okaloosa County for twenty years expires, and $824,018 a year walks out with it. 100% of creator fees go to the Panhandle Animal Welfare Society — the shelter left holding the kennels, and the one this coin is named after. Panhandle Animal
Welfare Society
PAWS has sheltered Okaloosa County's animals out of Fort Walton Beach for decades, and ran the county's animal control for more than twenty years. On the last figures it put on the record, in mid-2025, it took in roughly 3,100 animals a year at about $700 each — strays, owner surrenders, cruelty cases, bite quarantines — on 56 dog kennels in a building from 1990, against $740,000 of municipal support and a $2 million bill. Its director said that year that animal control alone was expected to lose $750,000.
The cities left one at a time. Niceville cancelled. Mary Esther rejected the pricing. Destin's talks collapsed after six months. Fort Walton Beach, the biggest partner, has been month-to-month since August 2023 with no rate increase. In May the board voted not to renew the county contract it could no longer afford to subsidise, and on September 22 that contract ends.

The $PAWS token takes its name from the shelter, and nothing else: it is an independent community project, not affiliated with, endorsed by, or partnered with the Panhandle Animal Welfare Society, which has no involvement in it.
